How To Be Present And Accepting Of What Is
Learn about Counselling and Coaching.
Without allowing your present moment experience, there is no real transformation, no real shift, only the mind trying to figure things out and control the situation.
Most of the time experience is heavily conditioned, and clouded by our undigested history, and unconscious limitations and structures. We live a life were we are identified with thoughts, and a sense of self that believes it has to protect and defend itself against an outer "other".
It is the most compassionate thing we can do to let ourselves feel what is going on. There is nothing wrong with any of the feelings, if we can embrace them and let them be, without unconsciously acting them out and being insensitive to others.
It is one of the keys to living a harmonious and peaceful life, to find amidst the inner struggle a place where we can rest and let things be.
So here are ways the mind strategizes to avoid the present moment experience:
1. Being distracted
Not focusing your attention on the present moment experience. Being involved in multiple things, multi tasking and not slowing down are ways to keep you on the surface level of your experience.
2. Judging your experience in the moment
Simply allowing the experience is only possible if we don’t judge the experience and devalue the unfoldment of the moment. This requires trust that if we let go of control, what will come up is going to be OK.
3. Pretending we are not having this experience
Often times when we feel stuck or find it difficult to be with the feelings unfolding, we can get into a mode of pretending things are not happening. We might numb ourselves or try to suppress what we are really feeling.
4. Trying to feel a more desirable feeling
Another way we don't pay attention to the present moment experience is by simply trying to focus on more acceptable feelings, by ignoring what is going on currently within us.
If you notice that you are engaging in strategies to avoid the present moment, simply notice it, and return your attention to the present moment. Do not give yourself a hard time, by judging yourself further, but rather accept it as part of the ongoing experience in the moment.
The awareness that you ultimately are, can include all these different possibilities and strategies without you needing to further inflict hurt or harsh judgement on yourself.
Being present doesn't mean you have to split of parts of yourself off in order to fulfill a certain spiritual image or ideal. It is simply getting more and more in touch with the inherent completeness of your own present moment awareness without having to meddle with what is occurring.
In time the separate experiencer that is wanting to influence and shape the present moment, can become more and more transparent to the unfoldment of the moment, and truly surrender out of love for the magnificence of Being.
